The Vincent scene was a genuine shower scene: just as child psychologist and wife settle down in the bedroom, psycho Vincent pops out of the master bathroom, stripped down for full Effect. What can drive one as though possessed to the gunpoint of violence is the refusal to listen to your ghosts, to attend to their unfinished business. But what are ghosts animated by unfinished business? Therapy fictions. Unfinished business would correspond to the transferential relationship in session that cannot always be subsumed by the finitude of the therapeutic task at hand, which upon successful completion can be let go. Shyamalan’s precursor was Stanley Kubrick, the director famous for cinematically reinterpreting each new genre to which he contributed one film, the mantle Shyamalan hoped to assume twenty years later. Kubrick’s The Shining set up its portrait of the haunted child at the very turning point (in 1980) of the therapeutic engagement with Hitchcock’s Schauer scene. As Stephen King acknowledges in hindsight, ghostliness was for the author but an analogue for the effect upon the father of traumatic memories of abuse. The tendency in the novel to establish the hotel as less haunted and more infernally possessed is not an option in the film. The hotel may be possessed but not by infernal agency but rather by the murder victims and the evil dead perpetrators. That Kubrick understood the context in which he was intervening is evident in other changes he introduced into the story, which were cite specific, for example aligning the plot with the slasher/splatter thematic of survival: Hallorran, the African-American cook who shares the boy’s telepathic prowess, is not admitted into the open-ended survival of the boy and his mother (in the book he even remains behind as the good father). Kubrick followed Diane Arbus into the tight spot of what Roland Barthes would address as punctum, the point of the medium where the violence in mourning is enigmatically contained and directed. Although Shyamalan, like Kubrick, doesn’t admit the Devil into the horror film, he secures the ‘perfection’ of his film by linking and limiting haunting to the finitude of a therapeutic outcome, the new nihilism in the wake of the contained Psycho Effect. If the ghost isn’t clear and the psycho is contained, then a new clear text was expected. Already The Blair Witch Project, for all the diversion of new rumour media, gestured in this direction.

Fans of The Shining (or any of Stanley Kubrick's movies) understand the importance the director placed on minor details. As somebody who is a massive fan of the movie, I was certain that I studied and memorized every small detail in this film and what it's potential meaning was. I was shocked when one of my viewers pointed out this red book was on Stuart Ullman's desk. Why, you may ask?
